CHAPTER 36

Kenna’s breath hitched when she caught her first glimpse of the towering ivory castle. Brumalis Castle looked like something out of a dream. It was rectangular with six stone towers topped with turrets pointing into the heart of the stars. The castle stood perched in a sea of clouds against a backdrop of obsidian snowcapped mountains.

“Is it floating?” she asked, hoping it wasn’t a stupid question. She still didn’t understand the limitations of angel magic.

“No, but it does look like it. We’ll go down that way and cross the bridge. Ash gestured to the road which veered left and disappeared into the clouds via multiple steep switchbacks.

“Ah, yes. That makes sense.” Ash probably thought Kenna had never seen fog before.

The chill seemed to be seeping into her bones even though she’d indulged in three notelixir cocktails at dinner. Her blood was humming pleasantly, but the warmth from the drink couldn’t stop her teeth chattering against the frigid night.

The road was wider outside of the city, so Ash was flying slowly along next to her. Suddenly, she nearly slid out of the saddle, giggling.

“I think…I think you should ride with me.” Ash didn’t look happy about it. Was he mad at her for getting drunk?

He huffed, and settled onto the horse behind her. “You’re cold,” he said and she nodded.

Without a word, Ash draped his cloak over the front of her, sharing his body heat. The extra layer of material helped to shield her from the worst of the wind.

“Apologies for dropping the heat shield. Even I need to conserve my powers for alternative tasks sometimes. But I rather enjoy the smell of your lavender perfume.” He snuffled against her neck, like a dog sniffing about in a grassy meadow.

She giggled, too buzzed to object to his shameless flirtation or care whether his attention meant anything. She hadn’t even noticed the heat shield earlier or wondered why she hadn’t been freezing in the wintry night. She’d only noticed its absence when Ash let it fall.

“Pray tell, how will you shock and awe me this glorious evening,” she said, poking fun at his haughty accent even as his warmth seemed to ease the tension in her body.

“You’ll just have to wait and see, love,” he said.

She snorted.

“Something wrong?”

“I’m sorry. It’s just…you’ve called me love multiple times now and we barely know each other. Do you give all your friends pet names? Does Wren have a pet name? Do you call him ‘love’?”

“I … I apologize. Does it offend you?”

“I don’t really mind it with your cute little accent.”
